Mumbai has now earned a new title — the most forgetful city in India, according to Uber’s latest Lost and Found Index. Based on ride data from 2024, the report reveals some hilariously unexpected items left behind by riders in the city. While common forget-me-nots like phones, wallets and keys made the list, there were also quirky additions such as a wheelchair, telescope, hair wig, dog bark control device, and even a hawan kund (fire altar). With this, Mumbai has dethroned Delhi, which held the top spot for forgetfulness for the past two years.

With Mumbai now claiming the top spot, the most commonly forgotten items in Uber included bags, earphones, phones and wallets. These were closely followed by keys, spectacles and clothing. Coming to the “unique” items left in the cabs, one of them forgot their wedding saree while another actually left a gold biscuit. Moving forward, a rider happened to forget 25 kilograms of cow ghee, while another one forgot their cooking stove.

“We’ve all been there—that facepalm moment when we realised we forgot a cherished belonging in a cab. At Uber, we’ve made it easy to retrieve lost items with just a few steps in our app. We appreciate the trust our riders place in us each time they choose Uber, and we believe it’s the perfect moment to offer a quick refresher on how to recover items left behind,” Uber said in the statement.

The list also features metropolitans like Pune, Bengaluru, and Kolkata, standing in the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively. Analyzing the patterns of forgetfulness, Uber noted that Saturdays are the peak days for riders to forget their belongings, with evenings being the prime time for such occurrences. Also, festivals reported the most instances of forgetting items, with the occasions of Shiv Ratri and Akshay Tritiya in the top three. With all that said, the city called the least forgetful is Hyderabad.

Uber also offered a quick guide to help riders track their lost items. Here are the steps:

1. Click on the Menu icon.

2. Select Your Trips and select the trip where you believe you have left something.

3. Tap on ‘Report an issue with this trip’ and select ‘I lost an item.’

4. Tap ‘Contact my driver about a lost item’.

5. Scroll down, provide the mobile number you want to be contacted at, and tap Submit.

6. The call will be connected directly with the driver, and you can coordinate a mutually convenient time and place to meet for the return.

In case you are unable to contact the driver, select the in-app support to report the loss, and the company support team will help you.
