PM Narendra Modi honoured Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair’s legacy and his stand against British rule post-Jallianwala Bagh massacre during his Haryana visit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured lawyer-nationalist Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair’s legacy ahead of Akshay Kumar’s Kesari: Chapter 2 release. He remembered Nair’s heroism for standing up against the British rule after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Though he didn’t mention the film, PM Modi made these remarks during his recent visit to Haryana, where he inaugurated a number of significant development projects, including the Hisar Airport.
Addressing the audience, PM Modi spoke about the Baisakhi celebrations in Punjab and noted that the day also marks 106 years since the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. “There was Baisakhi in Punjab, but it was also the 106th anniversary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. One aspect of this massacre has remained in the dark — it is a humanitarian issue. There was a man named Sankaran Nair, whose name many may not have heard. He was a prominent lawyer holding a high post in the British government. He could have enjoyed all the perks and luxuries, but he chose to give it all up,” the Prime Minister said.
He added how Nair, hailing from South, felt deeply for his fellow countrymen from Punjab and decided to stand up for them against the British empire. “Though he was from Kerala and the incident happened in Punjab, he fought the case and moved the British. Sankaran Nair ensured that the British government was brought to the court of law. This is what makes India great — one India, a united India,” PM Modi added.
During his speech, the Prime Minister hailed Nair’s significant contributions and urged every citizen to remember his lasting legacy. He said, “The people of Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh should know about Sankaran Nair. Every adult and child should be aware of his contributions. We must remember him — he is an inspiration and a symbol of our patriotic spirit.”
PM Modi’s speech comes in days after BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s claims that Congress neglected its valiant leaders such as Sankaran Nair, Subhash Bose, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Dr Ambedkar, and others.
Meanwhile, Kesari 2 stars Akshay Kumar, R Madhavan and Ananya Panday. The film releases on April 18.
