Place Gig Workers draft bill in public domain for stakeholders views: Telangana CM

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has directed the officials concerned to place the draft bill envisaging job security, insurance coverage and other amenities to gig and platform workers in public domain for eliciting the views of the stakeholders.

The officials have been directed to take into consideration the suggestions, recommendations and objections from the people in the preparation of the final Bill. This will be the second Bill after Bhu Bharati (Record of Rights) Act to be placed in public domain before its enactment.

The Chief Minister held a meeting with gig workers, representatives of their unions and senior officials of different departments on Monday. Officials explained him about the salient features of the draft of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Bill.

Mr. Reddy wanted the officials to keep the draft Bill online for eliciting views of the people so that an effective legislation would be put in place. He suggested changes in the draft Bill to ensure that there were cordial relations and effective coordination between the companies and aggregators in addition to employment security of these workers.

Four lakh gig workers in Telangana

There were over four lakh gig workers engaged in food delivery, transport, package delivery and other trades in the State. Steps should be taken to take views and recommendations from all sections. Officials should focus on giving final touches to the provisions that would be incorporated in the proposed legislation.

April 25 deadline

The Chief Minister set April 25 deadline for the officials to prepare the final draft of the legislation. The deadline was set to ensure that the Act would come into force from May 1, coinciding with the International Labour Day. Mr. Reddy recalled that the Congress party had promised to bring a comprehensive legislation to protect the interests of gig and platform workers ahead of the previous [2023] Assembly elections.

₹5 lakh insurance cover order in December 2023

The Congress Government had issued an order on December 30, 2023 providing accidental insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh each to the families of gig and platform workers who meet accidental deaths. The officials were directed to ensure that the proposed legislation becomes a role model for the country.
