Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Monday slammed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah for meeting Union Minister Kiren Rijiju amid the row surrounding the Waqf Act.
This comes after Rijiju posted pictures with Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah taking a “morning walk amid the vibrant hues of the Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir”.
Referring to this, Mufti said, “What’s left to say when the Chief Minister of India’s only Muslim majority state gives a red carpet welcome to the BJP minister who introduced the Waqf bill meant to disempower & debilitate Muslims?”
She also praised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin who took a strong stance against the bill, introducing a resolution to protect Muslim rights. “Stands in stark contrast to Tamil Nadu CM who showed spine by swiftly introducing a resolution against Waqf bill,” Mufti wrote.
Meanwhile, a massive ruckus struck the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday over the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Parliament, as the ruling party demanded a discussion over the legislation, which became law after President Droupadi Murmu’s assent.
The National Conference (NC) moved an adjournment motion in the Assembly to discuss the contentious law, but the Speaker rejected it, sparking chaos in the House.
The Waqf Amendment Bill was recently passed in the Indian Parliament after intense debates in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on consecutive days, with discussions stretching late into the night.
In Lok Sabha, the Bill was passed in a 288-232 vote while in Rajya Sabha, the legislation received 128 votes in favour while 95 votes opposed it.
According to an official order, the new law will be titled the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. Under this amendment, the word “Waqf” will be replaced with “Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development” (UMEED).
