Glow this summer season by choosing the right skincare. Doctor shares skincare tips for every skin type. Here’s everything you need to know.

Summer’s scorching heat wreaks havoc on the skin. For every person, depending on their skin type, summer can feel like a personal hell, whether it’s oily skin becoming even greasier or dry skin feeling flaky and dehydrated. The season is very harsh and intense, worsening existing skin problems while adding a few more.

But don’t sweat it, your summer skincare routine is here to shield you from the heat’s woes. The secret lies in skincare that works with your skin type, not against it. Since every person has a unique skin type, a one-size-fits-all approach simply won’t do. Every skin type has certain, distinctive problems which only a dedicated skincare routine can treat, not a generic one.

This summer, glow instead of groaning in frustration, and find the perfect skincare routine tailored to your skin’s needs.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Ameesha Mahajan, Cosmetic Dermatologist & Founder, Eden Skin Clinic, shared the ideal summer skincare routines and hacks for every skin type:

Oily skin

Problem-People with oily skin tend to experience more oily skin and breakouts in the summer.

  • Cleanser: A gentle cleanser that is gel-based is adequate to remove extra oil/sebum from the skin. Prefer salicylic acid-based cleanser.
  • Moisturiser: Apply a moisturiser that is lightweight and not oily. Choose gel or water-based formulas with hyaluronic acid.
  • Sunscreen: Choose mattifying sunscreen, SPF 50, non-comedogenic, and lightweight (gel-based or mineral sunscreen).
  • Oil-absorbing face masks: Use clay masks twice a week to control excess sebum.
  • Blotting papers: A quick fix to remove shine throughout the day.

Dry skin

Problem- Summer heat can dehydrate dry skin, making it flaky and irritated.

  • Hydrating cleanser: Choose a cream-based or gentle foaming cleanser to prevent stripping moisture.
  • Lightweight yet hydrating moisturizer: Opt for glycerin, ceramides, or squalane to maintain hydration.
  • Sunscreen with added moisture: SPF 50, with ingredients like niacinamide or hyaluronic acid.
  • Face mists: Spritz a hydrating mist throughout the day to refresh your skin.
  • Aloe vera gel: Soothes and cools skin, preventing dryness.

Combination skin

Problem- Balancing oily and dry zones in summer can be challenging.

  • Use a mild gel-based cleanser: Removes excess oil from the T-zone while keeping other areas hydrated.
  • Dual-action moisturiser: Lightweight gel moisturiser for oily areas, and a slightly richer one for drier spots.
  • Non-greasy sunscreen: SPF 50, gel or fluid texture to prevent excess shine.
  • Spot treatment for oil control: Clay masks on the T-zone once a week.
  • Hydrating serums: Niacinamide or hyaluronic acid to balance oil and moisture.

Sensitive skin

Problem- Summer triggers redness, irritation, and rashes in sensitive skin.

  • Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser: Avoid harsh exfoliants or foaming cleansers.
  • Barrier-strengthening moisturiser: Choose ceramides, centella asiatica, or oat extracts.
  • Physical sunscreen: SPF 50 with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for minimal irritation.
  • Cold compress or ice rolling: Soothes inflammation and reduces redness.
  • Minimal skincare: Stick to essential steps to avoid irritation.

  • Drink plenty of water: Hydration starts from within.
  • Avoid heavy creams: Switch to lightweight, fast-absorbing formulas.
  • Double cleanse if needed: Helps remove sweat, oil, and sunscreen buildup.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses: Physical protection is just as important as sunscreen.
  • Regular sun protection: If you are outdoors, application of sunscreen every 2-3 hours is required for skin’s protection from sun damage.
