Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla fulfils brotherly promise at Pulwama martyr daughter’s wedding | Jaipur News – The Times of India

KOTA: Lok Sabha speaker and Kota-Bundi MP Om Birla fulfilled a heartfelt promise Friday by performing the Mayra ceremony at the wedding of Pulwama martyr CRPF soldier Hemraj’s daughter, Reena Meena (25), in Sangod village, Kota district. Birla, assuming the role of a brother to Hemraj’s widow Madhubala, provided support and honoured his pledge by participating in the wedding ceremonies.
“As her maternal uncle, it was my duty to stand by my sister Madhubala on this important day,” said Birla, who has supported the family since Hemraj’s martyrdom in the 2019 Pulwama attack.
In Hindu wedding ritual, Bhaat or Maira (pack of gifts) is traditionally offered by the brother from maternal side to his sister on her daughter’s wedding.
Birla presented traditional wedding gifts, including an Odhani, in the Bhaat ritual, a custom where a maternal uncle offers blessings and presents to his sister’s daughter at her wedding. He was joined by Rajasthan’s energy minister Heeralal Nagar in the symbolic gesture.
The emotionally charged ceremony underscored the strong bond between Birla and Hemraj’s widow. Birla, as brother to martyr’s wife, has consistently visited her home in Sangod during Raksha Bandhan since Hemraj attained martyrdom six years ago. “He has been like a true brother, never missing a Raksha Bandhan since my husband’s sacrifice,” said Madhubala, moved by Birla’s continued support.
The wedding home of the fallen CRPF soldier resonated with both celebration and remembrance. “Hemraj’s sacrifice will never be forgotten. We are one family, forever,” Birla said.
