In the bustling lanes of Indore’s famed Sarafa Chowpatty, where the aroma of street food lingers in the air and culinary delights tempt visitors at every turn, one vendor has turned a simple dish into a breathtaking spectacle. Here, food is not just eaten; it soars through the sky before landing on a plate – quite literally. This is the story of Indore’s famous Flying Dahi Vada, an act of showmanship that has been wowing onlookers for 15 years.

For over a decade and a half, Omprakash Joshi, the man behind the gravity-defying Flying Dahi Vada, has captivated food lovers with his extraordinary serving style. His unique technique involves tossing a plate of dahi vada high into the air – sometimes as high as 12 feet – before expertly catching it, all while ensuring not a single drop of curd spills. The mesmerising performance has made his humble stall a must-visit destination for both food enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike.

Watch the viral video here:

What started as a small trick, where Joshi would toss the plate just a few feet, has now become a full-fledged attraction. “Initially, I could only manage 2-3 feet, but years of practice and passion took me to 12 feet,” Joshi recollected. As the plate spins mid-air, the crowd erupts into applause, and cameras capture the moment, turning his skill into a viral sensation.

This celebrated food stall traces its roots back to 1965, when a single dahi vada could be savoured for a mere 40 paise. Over the decades, while prices have changed – today, a serving costs Rs 70 – the signature taste has remained untouched.

What sets Joshi’s dahi vada apart is its size and texture: larger and softer than the typical variety, it melts in the mouth, offering a harmonious blend of flavours. The rich, cool curd, tangy tamarind chutney, and a sprinkle of sendha masala create a burst of taste that lingers long after the last bite.

As summer temperatures soar, so does the demand for this chilled delicacy. The perfect mix of creamy curd, fresh vada, and a carefully balanced spice medley ensures that once a visitor takes a bite, they’re bound to return for more.
