An esteemed profession in India, teaching offers the chance to shape future generations. After class 12, many students aim to become government teachers but don’t know where to begin. If you’ve completed Class 12th and wish to pursue this profession, here is all you know need to enter the profession including eligibility criteria, courses, and entrance exams to take.

Eligibility Criteria Needed To Become A Teacher

After passing class 12, here is what you need to do:

Primary Level Teaching (Classes 1-5): A two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.) or Diploma in Education (D.Ed.).

Upper Primary Level Teaching (Classes 6-8): A four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) or D.El.Ed. and a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline or vice versa.

Secondary and Higher Secondary Level Teaching (Classes 9-12): A graduate and a postgraduate degree followed by a Bachelor’s in Education (B.Ed.).

How To Choose The Right Course

The first step is to choose the right course after Class 12th. Enroll in a teacher training programme. For primary level, D.El.Ed. is common. For upper primary, a B.El.Ed. or B.Ed. degree is required. Choose based on your teaching level aspiration.

Entrance Exams

Pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), conducted at central and state levels, like CTET and STET. The TET has two papers: Paper I for Classes 1-5 and Paper II for Classes 6-8. Clear the relevant paper for your teaching level.

After passing TET, apply for government teaching jobs through education board notifications. The recruitment process usually includes a written examination and, for some posts, an interview and document verification.

Undergo Training and Induction Selected teachers undergo an induction programme, learning teaching techniques, school management, and administrative duties to prepare for their roles.

Opportunities for Professional Growth Government teachers can advance their careers by becoming Head Teachers, Principals, Teacher Educators, or Specialist Teachers in areas like curriculum development or special education.
