Tech billionaire Elon Musk predicts a near-future where humanoid robots will outnumber humans. The Tesla CEO believes that these robots could be twice the human population in the near future.
On X, Musk shared a video of Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot. The video showed Optimus take steady steps forward. He captioned the post, “Accurate actuators accelerate automation.”
The robot has been in development for several years, and represents Musk’s entry into robotics.
Musk warned that in the long term humanoids could outnumber humans by at least twice the population. He said, “Long-term, I think there will be more… the ratio of humanoid robots will be more than one to one. There might be two humanoid robots or more, maybe ten, for every one human.”
Musk did not rule out the possibility of having ten humanoids per person, adding, “There will be well in excess of 10 billion humanoid robots.”
Optimus was first announced in 2021 and is expected to be available for sale in 2026. Elon Musk has hinted at a price tag between $20,000 and $30,000. The company intends to mass produce the robot. The Tesla factory in Fremont has already begun production with a target of around 10,000 robots by the end of this year.
Since its public debut in 2022, Optimus has made rapid progress, now nearing its final development stage. Musk acknowledged, “The rate of improvement is indeed rapid.”
