As the AI-generated Ghibli images take the world by storm, here’s how Ghibli is actually pronounced.
AI-generated Ghibli-style images are trending on social media due to OpenAI’s ChatGPT upgrade.
AI-created Ghibli-style pictures are the latest trend that has been sweeping social media, with individuals sharing multiple visuals inspired by Studio Ghibli’s animation. OpenAI’s recent ChatGPT upgrade has made it simple for users to make such illustrations in the traditional Japanese style, a remnant of Hayao Miyazaki films. The craze has transformed everything from movie scenes to personal photos into Ghibli-style images. But while everyone is transforming their images, many are confused about how to actually pronounce Ghibli.
The confusion derives from the studio’s history and the linguistic trip that the name “Ghibli” has made. “Ghibli” originated from an Italian term spoken with emphasis on “G” This Italian word refers to a hot wind from the Sahara Desert. Miyazaki, who is deeply fascinated by aviation, named the studio after the Italian Caproni Ca.309 Ghibli aircraft. This aircraft also carried the Italian pronunciation. However, when this Italian word was used in Japan, the sound changed due to phonetic restrictions in their language. Because of phonetic changes, it is commonly pronounced “JEE-blee” in Japanese, whereas in the West it is pronounced as “GIB-lee”
Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli is a well-known and award-winning Japanese animation studio in Koganei, Tokyo. It was formed in 1985 by animators and directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, as well as producer Toshio Suzuki. Over the years, the firm has gained global recognition for its high-quality animated feature films with hand-drawn figures.
Generating Ghibli images was only available to premium users, but due to high demand, it is now available to all ChatGPT users. Sam Altman verified the update earlier on Tuesday in a post on X. This will allow more people to experience the viral Ghibli-style artwork that has become the talk of the town in recent days.
chatgpt image gen now rolled out to all free users!— Sam Altman (@sama) April 1, 2025
The free AI model on ChatGPT 4o does support image production; nevertheless, Altman is compelled to impose some limitations in order to encourage consumers to pay for the feature and the AI service. The free tier ChatGPT users can generate three photos per day, which may not seem like much, but that’s the whole goal of keeping it free, so that OpenAI can get more people to pay the $20 (Rs 1700 roughly) per month for further perks.
