IOC approves shooting plan for LA 2028

The number of shooters in the finals for rapid fire pistol and shotgun events have been increased from six to eight, on par with other finals, in the shooting programme approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the Los Angeles 2028 Games.

More importantly, the finals of the 50-metre rifle 3-position events return to the earlier format of “only standing position”. The qualification will remain unchanged with 60 shots in all in the kneeling, prone and standing positions.

The mixed skeet team competition gives way to the mixed trap team event.

“We are extremely pleased to have our 15 shooting events confirmed in the Olympic programme for LA28,” said Luciano Rossi, the president of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).

In the mixed team competitions, all four teams will compete together for the medals, instead of the current practice of having the bronze and gold medal matches separately.

These changes will be implemented in the international circuit from January 1, 2026.

Shooting will continue to have 340 quota places for the Olympics.
