ChatGPT Aadhar Card Misuse: Several social media users shared screenshots showing ChatGPT generating fake Aadhaar and PAN cards, raising security concerns and calls for AI regulation.
ChatGPT is reportedly generating fake Aadhaar and PAN cards, raising security concerns.
ChatGPT Aadhar Card Misuse: OpenAI’s artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has dominated headlines over the past few weeks, thanks to its new Studio Ghibli image generator feature. Millions of users are creating Ghibli-style images and sharing them across social media.
However, ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities are also under scrutiny after users on social media shared images that they claimed to show the AI chatbot generating fake Indian identity documents such as Aadhaar and PAN cards. Netizens highlighted serious security concerns and called for AI to be regulated.
“Just read that ChatGPT can create fake Aadhaar and PAN cards if given the right prompt. If this is true, it’s a huge problem. Imagine how easy it would be for scammers to misuse this—fake identities, bank fraud, financial crimes, the list goes on,” said a user on LinkedIn.
Can ChatGPT Create ‘Fake’ Aadhaar, PAN Cards?
To check if ChatGPT was really creating these fake Aadhaar and PAN cards, News18‘s sister publication Moneycontrol.com asked it on the Mac app to create an Aadhaar image. However, ChatGPT refused and said, “I can’t help with creating or modifying official documents like Aadhaar cards. If you need one, it’s best to visit the official UIDAI website or a certified Aadhaar enrollment center near you. Let me know if you need help finding one or understanding the process!”
However, ChatGPT’s response on the iPhone app was slightly different. It cited legal and ethical guidelines for not replicating official identification documents, but offered to create a “mock-up” or “template-style graphic for a presentation or design” with fictional details.
Intrigued by this response, we at News18 also decided to see if ChatGPT was really creating such replica IDs. When we asked ChatGPT to create an Aadhaar card, it said, “I can’t create a mockup of a PAN (Permanent Account Number) card, as it’s an official government document used for identity and tax purposes in India. If you need a PAN card for official use, you can apply for one through the NSDL or UTIITSL websites.”
When we asked it to create a mock-up image, ChatGPT replied by saying, “I can’t generate a mock Aadhaar card, as it’s an official government-issued identity document in India. However, if you’re looking for a general ID card template inspired by Aadhaar’s design (without real details), I can create a custom sample for personal or design purposes.”
ChatGPT then created a custom sample ID of an Aadhaar card, without any details. An important point to mention here is that ChatGPT will refuse to modify the sample photo with real and historical names, so we asked it to create another sample with a generic name and a randomly generated face. The result is below:
Note: It is strongly recommended that you do not share your personal information with anyone, even ChatGPT.
However, several social media users shared screenshots on social media showing users asking ChatGPT to create replicas of Aadhar and PAN cards with fabricated names, addresses and identification numbers. “Ok, so ChatGPT can create Aadhaar images. Thats not the interesting thing. The interesting thing is where did it get the Aadhar photos data for training?” one user said.

“People are worried ChatGPT collected their facial data. Buddy ChatGPT might already have your AADHAR CARD, how do you think it generated this?” another user commented. However, several netizens denied that ChatGPT could create fake Aadhaar and PAN cards.
How To Differentiate Between Real And Fake IDs?
If ChatGPT can indeed replicate Aadhaar and PAN cards, it would amount to serious security risks and would open the way for fraudsters to exploit this technology to create false IDs. It is strongly recommended that you do not share your personal information with anyone, even ChatGPT.
In order to distinguish between a real and an AI-generated ID, you need to check the passport-size image on the card, as AI images often vary even if they are sourced from a genuine image. You also need to compare the Hindi/English font on both cards and check the syntax – Aadhaar structure, placement of colons, commas etc.
You should also carefully check the logos of Aadhaar and the Government of India. You should also see if a QR code is there on the ID, and scan to check if it is authentic.
If you want to verify your Aadhaar card online, you can visit the Aadhaar websites – https://uidai.gov.in/ or https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/verifyAadhaar, where you need to enter your 12-digit identification number and captcha code. If your Aadhaar number is fake, you will not be able to proceed.
